This publication offers interesting possibilities both to those teaching about Sikhism and those charged with organising acts of collective worship. It also suggests considerable scope for collaboration between music and RE staff.
The tapes offer over an hour of beautifully performed Sikh hymns (it would have been useful, though, to have had some indication of timings).
The accompanying book provides the words in the original Punjabi, transliterated and translated into English, together with the music in standard western notation.
There are some helpful notes for teachers, including brief background information about the hymns. Some of the spelling and grammar in the book leaves something to be desired, and occasionally names mentioned in the hymns are not explained in the notes. Some information about the instruments played would also have been useful. However, used carefully, this is a welcome resource for enriching pupils' appreciation of the Sikh tradition.
