Sound of music

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is working with Grangemouth High, hosts of this year's SoundTown studio for BBC Radio Scotland.

The studio has been installed in the school to help pupils learn about different aspects of broadcasting. Pupils contribute to programmes and BBC staff train them in production and broadcasting techniques.

The orchestra is contributing in various ways. Last term principal trumpet Mark O'Keefe led a workshop for brass players. This term learning manager Jennifer Martin is leading a series of composition workshops which culminate in the performance and recording of new works by members of the orchestra on March 10. Senior singers at the school will act as a backing group.

The whole orchestra will visit the school the following day for a recording of Radio 3's Discovering Music programme, in which a Haydn symphony will be discussed by conductor and broadcaster Charles Hazelwood in terms of Standard grade and Higher concepts.
