Year 11 and I had been grappling with the arguments for the existence of God - as laid down in the syllabus for the short GCSE course in religious studies.

In order to explain the argument that the design of the Universe demonstrates that there must have been a designer, I took a hand-made crochet tablecloth into class. We looked at it briefly, and then one pupil asked the question I had been hoping for. "Did you make it, Miss?" "What would you say," I answered, "if I said that I had put lots of cotton into this carrier bag, spun it round and round many times, and then out came this tablecloth?" "I'd ask you how much you wanted for the carrier bag."
