The class (top infants, Year 2) was doing writing about poor children in the 19th century to prepare them for a visit to the Ragged School, a museum and theatre in Stepney, east London.

The pupils had been talking about the number of orphaned children there were living in the area at the time and the work of the charity Dr Barnado’s in helping them.

One girl in the class, who obviously had trouble with her hearing, wrote:

“I have no mum or dad and I eat from the bin. I have no food to eat and I am very poor. I want lots of bananas to come and help me.”
