Following a recent drugs education programme run by a London borough, our Year 6 children were given pencils bearing the slogan “It’s not cool to do drugs”. A lack of foresight on the part of the educators was revealed after a few sharpenings, when the message became “cool to do drugs”. Even worse, by the end of term the advice had been shortened to “do drugs”.

All the early years and key stage 1 pupils trooped across the hall for the eagerly-awaited arrival of the animal man. Everyone sat in silence while he showed a variety of creatures. Then he walked along each row, carrying a skunk. A small voice near the front shrieked: “It smells like my grandma.”
