* Year 1 pupil to her teacher: "Are we doing Dick Thompson this afternoon?"

"Pardon?"

"Dick Thompson. You know, like we did yesterday."

"Ah... you mean dictation."

* The school's resources were running low and the children had been warned to preserve pens and pencils. I watched one pupil, deep in concentration, snapping coloured pencils. "Are ou snapping the coloured pencils?" "No Miss, just the yellow ones."
