During my first year of teaching practice with a class of Year 1 pupils, a boy asked me if I’d seen a particular TV programme the night before. I told him I hadn’t. He frowned and, after a short pause, asked why. I explained that I hadn’t got a television (I was living in halls of residence). He seemed confused. He thought for a while then asked: “Are you from the past, Miss?”
