South Gloucestershire pupils will be taking to the airwaves after being given a slot on their local community radio station.
They have been invited to broadcast on Gloss FM, which will be launched this month, replacing Thornbury FM. Gloss FM staff will help to set up radio clubs in schools within the new, wider broadcast area.
Children will talk about school life and teachers will use radio as an educational tool. During April the pupils will be heard live, but after that they will appear on Gloss FM’s online station.
Heather Goddard, executive member for communities at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “I am delighted that our radio station is taking to the airwaves again and thrilled that, thanks to a grant from the council, schoolchildren will get the chance to be involved. It will be a great experience for them to hear their own scripts and reports broadcast live across the district.”
In nearby Bath and North East Somerset, pupils are also becoming involved in the area’s cultural life by meeting top authors. They have been voting for the winner of the Centurion Book Award Ceremony, which is run by the council to encourage reading and book review writing in schools. km.
