The polygon School in Southampton, which educates boys with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties, has been celebrating the footballing success of one of its pupils.

Lorimar Mason, 17, has just completed his fifth and final season for the Hampshire under-17s team, which was set up in 2004 for players outside mainstream education.

The team plays in a seven-county league. Lorimar is Hampshire’s most profilic striker, with 22 goals in 17 appearances. He is also the Hampshire player who has appeared most often.

The young striker, who has captained the team for the past two seasons, received an award from The Polygon School last month in honour of his achievements.

Mick Quinn, his teacher, said: “When Lorimar came to Polygon he had many difficulties. He was often angry and unhappy. He lacked confidence and was poorly self-motivated. At the end of Year 9, he was demonstrating sound academic ability and was enjoying success representing Hampshire at football.”

Matt Harvey, Hampshire team manager, said: “Lorimar leads in terms of attitude, effort and ability and the other players look up to him.” hw.
