Spanish has overtaken German as the second most popular foreign language taught in England, according to a survey by Cilt, the national centre for languages. The poll of 2,000 secondaries found that more than half of schools now taught languages to fewer than 50 per cent of pupils, with French the most popular. It also found a growing gulf between the state and the independent sector, where all pupils normally study a language at GCSE.
