ON behalf on the Somerset Association of Secondary Headteachers I wish to record our dismay at the proposed training needed to implement the new key stage 3 strategy in the summer term. This late plan will involve 20 days per school when teachers will not be in front of their classes.

The lack of alignment planning with schools by the Department for Education and Employment is the major concern. Heads are not againt the proposals but would have wished to plan the cover implications in advance - schools have development plans that are organised, costed and discussed in advance. This imposition reflects a misunderstanding of how schools operate. Would ministers wish their children’s schooling to be so disrupted?
