On special needs

Regarding the Tories' special needs plans (TES, August 3), after more than a quarter of a century as a secondary head in deprived areas, I am now working for a trust that supports visually impaired young people. I support them when there are problems with the education system.

I have never voted for the Tories in my life but believe their policy commission's proposals for special needs are the way forward. Special needs profiles, properly launched, could give parents the reassurance they need without the cumbersome statementing procedure.

Independent assessment of pupils' needs would save a great deal of time, money and stress so long as the rules were made very clear and took into account the limited means at the disposal of local authorities.
