ONLY one in 14 specialist schools makes use of their right to select up to 10 per cent of pupils by aptitude, according to a Government survey.

The survey of 238 specialist schools (of which 142 responded), suggests that claims of selection “by the back door” are wide of the mark.

The number of such schools has moe than doubled since the election from 181 to 403. Ministers are collecting information on the admissions policy of each school through its progress reports.

Schools minister, Estelle Morris, revealed the information in answers to Labour MP, Hilary Benn and Phil Willis, Liberal Democrat education spokesman.
