The Borders would benefit from fewer but better sports facilities, argues a new report.

The distinct identity of the area’s towns has led to each having its own facilities. But the status quo was “not a long-term sustainable option”, said Graham Garvie, Scottish Borders Council executive member for sport, culture and community learning.

The report, carried out for the council by Kit Campbell Associates and the Sports and Leisure Consultancy, criticises the “daft” situation that sees Borders people willing to drive 40 miles to Edinburgh rather than use facilities a few miles away.

The case is made for a regional sports centre, with Netherdale in Galashiels the most likely location; nearby Tweedbank is the other suggestion. Some swimming pools could close, but others would be upgraded.

The report outlines several possibilities, which will be consulted on until November 30.
