On the spot

David Spencer Class teacher, St Bridget's C of E Primary School, Brigham, Cumbria

We had a very enjoyable morning and will definitely be returning. The children were surprised that the Georgians had chocolate tarts and didn't know they could eat flower petals.

They said they would have liked more time to taste all the different Georgian foods, to use the computers and to play in the garden.

The fact that the children could see, touch and use the artefacts helped reinforce much of the work we had done in our topic on homes in the past.

We chose to make lavender bags as a "take-away" activity. The children were very pleased to have something to take home, but it was a bit too challenging for them to do by themselves. As follow-up, the class has written thank-you letters to the costumed interpreters who showed us around and led the activities.

We have also set up our role-play area as a home from the past, which is very popular.

It is a pity there are no indoor facilities, as we could have extended our visit.
