Mike Greaves, Year 5 teacher, St Mary’s Primary School, Bridport, Dorset

Developing SMSC (social moral and spiritual and cultural) education is all about getting children to be more aware of the world around them and their place in it. At St Mary’s we try to find as many opportunities as possible to make experiences practical and memorable. Prior to the visit the children had taken an online multiple-choice test which opened their eyes to some of the less obvious dangers around them. Streetwise certainly hit the target in many of the curriculum PSHE objectives. From the moment the children entered the Streetwise world, they were fully engaged. Excellent guides had previously briefed us to stay in the background and allow the children to experience each scenario, including a stranger danger situation. Some fell for it, but maybe that was because we were there, so they felt it must be safe. The post-visit test showed the value of the visit, and many of the children still recall their favourite bits, and have nagged parents to improve their household safety.
