London has always been a magnet for migrants as a new find, which went on show at the Museum of London earlier this week, illustrates. The Saxon belt buckle, recently found on the outskirts of London and pictured right, is typical of the kind worn between AD600 and AD720 in southern Spain. More recent cultural changes in the capital are highlighted in a full autumn programme beginning this weekend at the museum and its sister establishment, the Museum in Docklands, with many events tying in with Black History Month. Events for adults include Sonja Linden’s drama, I have before me a remarkable document given to me by a young lady from Rwanda (October 29). Children’s events at the Museum in Docklands include a Saturday storytelling session for children aged four and over. Make a date in your diary for the end of October, when a new exhibition of interviews, photographs, objects, art and film tells the stories of why refugees come to the city, the challenges they face and the contributions they make.

Heathland, mountains, and sea, rock pools, clifftop views and small harbours characterise the ever-changing North Wales coastline. Officially opened earlier this summer, the Lleyn coastal path is 146km (84 miles) long, but day or weekend walkers can still blow away the cares of the new term and the shorter autumn days by choosing a section or two - perhaps part of the northern route once used by pilgrims to Bardsey Island, burial place of early Christian saints, or across the little bays of Nefyn for lunch in a pub. The annual International Bognor Birdman competition is being held on Bognor Regis pier next weekend (September 9 and 10). There are classes for innovative craft, modified hang-gliders, longest time in the air, “funniest moment”, and most entertaining entrant, with a pound;25,000 jackpot offered by Butlins for the furthest flight over a prescribed distance.
