In the week that the National Union of Teachers struck out against army recruitment “propaganda” in schools, children in Hampshire were apparently “awestruck” by a military invasion on the school field.

A Squirrel helicopter from the Middle Wallop Barracks flew on to the football pitch at Mountbatten School in Romsey, ostensibly to teach pupils about science.

Corporal James Steele explained the concept of trajectory with this SA80 rifle, and pupils learnt how the helicopter worked. Clearly, these kinds of demonstrations can be great for teaching - and maybe for army recruitment too.

Their teacher, Sarah Dove, told the Southern Daily Echo: “The children thought it was amazing. Trying to get them back to class was a nightmare.”
