Primary schools across Stoke-on-Trent are to be expanded at a cost of #163;18 million to cope with increasing pupil numbers.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council plans to create 1,400 new places in 15 of the city’s primary schools over the next two years. The developments will consist of new or extended classrooms, toilets, cloakrooms and play areas.

With figures reportedly rising due to a baby boom and fewer children in independent education, parents are opting for the best schools.

“Certain schools in the city are inundated with applications,” said Deborah Gratton, a Labour councillor. “There are enough places for every child to meet the current demand but, where parents have a preference, we must ensure we provide places in the right areas.” gl.
