Starring role for qualifications

The article (TES, April 22) on the use of the Bigfoot Theatre Company for supply cover struck a raw nerve. While I think it’s great for pupils to be given the opportunity to have drama with drama specialists, there is more to teaching than just subject knowledge. The National Union of Teachers fought long and hard to ensure “teachers” were properly qualified.

Now that ethos is being thrown out as more schools use unqualified personnel to teach. The company director’s comment was telling. “Qualified teachers are more used to working to a rigid lesson plan. Our supply staff can be more flexible.” In my initial training, flexibility was seen as an essential attribute. What have New Labour and Ofsted done to us?
