Chief Inspector David Bell is extending his remit. Next Monday, he will inspect the heavens when he goes to South Downs Planetarium in Chichester.

Mr Bell is observing a primary school visit to the planetarium and can marvel at its link to NASA’s Hubble telescope.

Staff have high hopes of positive feedback from the demanding Mr Bell, who told his inspectors a while back that “satisfactory” teaching was no longer good enough.

So what are we to make of the following extract from an Ofsted report on pupils’ satisfaction with their schools, published this week? “IIn just under one fifth of secondary schools, inspectors sense that satisfaction levels are no more than satisfactory.”
