Statistical analysis should be taught in subjects such as geography and biology, Professor Adrian Smith, head of the Government’s maths inquiry said.

Teenagers need to be given a better understanding of the concept of risk so they can react intelligently when controversial scientific issues are covered in the media.

The principal of Queen Mary college, London, made a similar recommendation to the Government and the suggestion is likely to be incorporated in the Tomlinson review of secondary qualifications.
