Statistical slant

I DO hate all this obsession with statistics but the Department for Education and Skills figures give a slightly different slant on Colin Hall's achievements at one of the country's 50 most improved schools.

During his first year at Longford school, Hounslow, west London, the number of pupils gaining five A*-C grades stood at 23 per cent but by his last year this had fallen to 22 per cent. In fact, during his last two years, the relative decline would have placed Longford within the worst 100 performing schools in the country.
