The creation of a pound;300 million “super campus” for Glasgow’s four city-centre colleges has taken a step forward.

The principals and chairs of Central, Stow and Glasgow Metropolitan and Glasgow College of Nautical Studies have signed an agreement to establish New Campus Glasgow, a specialist company that will advance the procurement of the campus.

In a joint statement, the principals said: “This will be the largest and most ambitious college development project to have ever taken place in the UK and will also be one of the largest in Europe. It will offer world-class learning and teaching in world-class, cutting-edge facilities.”

The campus will house 2,000 staff and more than 50,000 students on two sites on Cathedral Street and Thistle Street. The co-location of the four colleges is separate from the proposed merger between Glasgow Metropolitan and Stow colleges, which is under discussion.

- The Government has acted to safeguard the charitable status of Scotland’s FE colleges. An order laid in the Scottish Parliament, expected to come into force later this year, subject to Parliamentary agreement, will exempt colleges from the standard rule that charities should be independent of Government.

The move follows a review last year of John Wheatley College by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. The review found that ministerial powers to direct further education colleges were inconsistent with the requirement that charities should operate independently of government. This meant that, without action by ministers, colleges would lose the right to charitable status.
