If citizenship lessons are to mean anything, they will need to bring theory and practice into some kind of association. New worksheets produced by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals help make that a reality. Key stage 3 pupils are given the means to debate issues like whaling or the cultural norms that make cock-fighting acceptable in some places. They are also invited to find things out on their own account. At KS4 they are encouraged to buttress arguments about vivisection and vegetarianism by active research on the internet and in the real world. There are two free citizenship packs from PETA (KS12 amp; KS34), each containing eight worksheets. They can be ordered from PETA REF, PO Box 24195, London SW18 4FF, tel: 020 8877 3392, fax: 020 8874 6845 Email: petaref@aol.com
