Teachers should encourage primary pupils to write their own Star Trek-style fiction to ignite their interest in science.

Rosemary Feasey, education consultant, said science fiction was a valuable tool to combine scientific theory and creativity and spark interest in the ethics of issues such as human cloning and climate change.
