In his conference welcome, Jordanhill supremo Iain Smith disclosed that he had done his own research - appropriately for such an event. He discovered that David Stow, founder of the great institution, was a firm believer in the virtues of co-education - but perhaps not in a way that would satisfy today’s educational correctness.

“The boys will elevate the girls intellectually,” Stow argued, “and the girls will elevate the boys morally.”

‘Twas ever thus.
