Strike threat averted by 3 per cent pay deal

Lecturers have voted to accept a phased 3 per cent pay rise to avert the threat of strike action.

Barry Lovejoy, head of further education at the University and College Union, said: "The settlement of the dispute offers the prospect of industrial relations peace for the sector but we expect employers to play their part and honour this deal in full."

He said the 140 colleges which have still failed to implement new pay scales agreed more than two years ago should begin local talks with unions under the new agreement.
