You have to hand it to the Kent-based Yourcounty website, which came up with one of the most entertaining of this year’s April Fool’s special reports.
While the BBC duped us with flocks of flying penguins, writers at the site informed credulous pedagogues that the balalaika was to replace violins and guitars in music lessons. The instrument’s mere three strings made it substantially cheaper to maintain than the others, the site quipped, and reduced the chances of a snapped string creating a health and safety issue.
The story was rendered even more plausible, given the trend for ukulele playing among school children, as revealed in The TES.
But the last line of the story gave the game away. “There is some hope for fans of wind: the kazoo is not expected to replace brass until 2010,” it tooted.
