FRANCE More strikes have been called by university students over under-funding, despite a promised extra 200 million francs (Pounds 27 million) from the education minister Francois Bayrou.

M Bayrou also promised to create 1,000 new teaching posts from next year. Other measures, as part of his University 2000 expansion programme, include a parliamentary commission into university financing. The universities say they need an extra 2 billion francs and have called a day of action on Thursday. Last week more than 100,000 students took to the streets joined by many lycee pupils.
