A radio station set up by students at Carmarthenshire College of Technology and Art will be used as a bridge between the college’s six campuses which are a 56-mile round trip apart.
Students at the Llanelli campus created Radio Graig in a Young Enterprise assignment and the station has already had a week’s airtime broadcasting entertainment and news four hours a day.
Now the station will broadcast to the other five campuses that take in Carmarthen, Ammanford and Golden Grove as well as Llanelli.
Huw Davies, the college spokesman, said the problem of isolated, far-flung sites could now be overcome thanks to technology.
It is hoped to get sponsorship from local companies and the station should be back on air soon. Most of the students involved are studying A-level media studies.
Station manager Emyr James, who has also worked in hospital radio, said: “Each campus at the moment is pretty individually based. Hopefully, this will help to bring together the students from the different colleges a bit more.”
During the week’s trial the station broadcast requests and tried to meet the musical needs of the 11,000-strong student audience.
“Everybody got a buzz out of doing it, but we learnt not everybody is going to be satisfied,” Mr James said. “There was some debate on what we should be playing, but most people seemed pretty pleased with what was broadcast. ”
