PRINCIPAL teachers are the biggest block to curriculum reform in secondary schools, Bob McKay, director of education in Perth and Kinross, said.
Calling for a new vision without subject barriers, Mr McKay said: “The reason we have Standard grade, chaos in S1-S2, Higher Still in its present form, and why secondaries don’t deliver on 5-14, is because of principal teacher subjects.”
Nobody in their right minds would want pupils to face 17 teachers every week. “Even variety has its limit,” Mr McKay stated.
He continued: “The days when there are weans in a room with a teacher of a specific subject will soon be a thing of the past.”
