Advanced Higher art candidates Sarah Struthers and Jasmine Hinks applied for funding to their education authority’s enterprise initiative scheme, and then approached the town’s Ruby Orange gallery.
Examples of the sixth years’ acrylic paintings and jewellery were shown in the gallery for two weeks last month and the students hosted a preview evening.
Erika Ward, principal art teacher, believes the experience showed pupils the practical side of a creative career. “It was great for them to see their work framed in a professional gallery and gave them some idea of the real world of art, rather than just working towards the exams,” she said.
The frames will be retained by the school, so that senior pupils in future will be able to organise similar events.
