- A lottery-funded booklet by P5-6 pupils at a Highland school aims to help children discover more about wildlife on their doorstep. Invergordon’s South Lodge Primary has been working with artist Gina Bates for a year. Highland Council hopes the booklet will help teachers to organise outdoor visits and fieldtrips.

- HNC acting and performance students at Inverness College UHI used recent child-safety statistics as inspiration for a hard-hitting performance for P7 pupils from Culbokie Primary, near Dingwall. Students took questions afterwards, encouraging the children to talk about issues which affected them.
Ground work
CROSS-CURRICULAR
- Hibernian FC and Edinburgh City Council are giving pupils the chance to learn at the club’s Easter Road ground. The Hibernian Edinburgh Learning Initiative will put learning into the real world. Pupils can explore players’ diets, football statistics and financing, and the club’s history. Trials are taking place at eight schools in the city.
Going green
ENVIRONMENT
- Schoolchildren have come up with innovative ideas to make Glasgow’s tenements greener and more energy-efficient. The Glasgow: City of Tenements competition encouraged 120 pupils to become more aware of issues of sustainability and design. Winners included St Bride’s Primary and Parkhill Secondary.
Safety hots up

- Primary pupils in rural Renfrewshire are learning what it is like to be a firefighter as part of a community safety scheme. Junior FireReach, run by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and paid for by the Renfrewshire LEADER fund for rural projects, teaches the dangers and environmental impact of fires. Pupils are treated as members of an on-duty watch, issued with kit and taking part in simulated drills.
