History

Primary pupils in Edinburgh can strike their own replica medieval Scottish coin at the city’s Museum on the Mound. The P5-7 event is one of the hands-on workshops where pupils can learn about the history of money and study original artefacts from the collections. Free sessions every afternoon until 2 May (not 18 April).

Time capsule

Tollcross Primary has made final additions to a time capsule that will be buried beneath the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. Pupils have been considering what their world might be like in 2061, when the capsule is re-opened. At an event to mark its completion last week, pupils dressed as children may do in 50 years’ time, as they do now, and in 1961-style clothes.

Green flag No4

Environment

Glasgow’s Eastbank Primary has been awarded its fourth green flag, making it a permanent eco-school. The Shettleston school is one of only 41 in Scotland to have gained this top accolade. Pupils have grown their own fruit and vegetables, learnt how to plant flowers, revamped the school pond and created a new log pile to encourage wildlife to live in the school grounds.

Water works

International

Edinburgh’s Wardie Primary has taken part in a fundraising Walking for Water Event. P7s walked six kilometres, carrying six litres of water, to raise money to guarantee safe water for 11 community schools in Zimbabwe. The distance was chosen to give pupils an understanding of how far some people have to walk for clean water.

Blackbirds soar

Eco studies

The blackbird is the most commonly-sighted bird in Scotland’s school grounds. It was among dozens of species recorded by 12,212 schoolchildren and teachers who took part in this year’s RSPB Big School’s Birdwatch. A record-breaking 386 primary and secondary schools participated in the survey, each spending one hour counting the birds in their grounds from 24 January to 4 February.
