Maths champs
Maths
- Arbroath Academy has won the Four Nations Maths Challenge, a competition to inspire students to enjoy maths. The challenge lasts two days, each focusing on a different skill. In Curriculum Mathletics, students were asked to master 50 maths concepts. The next day, mental arithmetic skills were challenged in Live Mathletics.
Love English

- The Love English Awards, hosted by Macmillan Dictionary Online, is inviting entries. They are run online and support blogs and websites devoted to all aspects of language. Members of the public nominate and vote for their favourite English-language online community - a non-commercial blog or website that encourages learning and promotes online discussion. http:tinyurl.comch6sygd

STEM
- Forth Valley College has become the first education body in Scotland to gain STEM Assured, a quality mark for training in science, technology, engineering and mathematics awarded by New Engineering Foundation: The Innovation Institute. The standard recognises excellence in STEM provision in the FE sector.
Bard on an iPad
Literature
- Cambridge University Press has launched its Explore Shakespeare series at RADA, bringing Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth to life on the iPad. The apps allow students to listen to an audio performance; see over 100 photographs of productions; access a glossary of Shakespeare’s language; and get plot summaries.
Creative careers
Arts
- The Creative Industries Conference for Young People brought together more than 90 students from South Ayrshire’s secondaries. Each pupil was selected for a particular interest in pursuing an arts career. Workshops included film sound effects, radioscreen writing, and theatre production. The conference was funded by Education Scotland and Creative Scotland as part of the council’s Creative Learning Network.
