- Amnesty International UK has announced a new prize for aspiring young photojournalists aged 7-14. The creation of a sixth category in the Young Human Rights Reporter of the Year competition has been sponsored by PhotoVoice, an organisation that specialises in helping young people to speak out through photography to share their perspectives.

- A West Dunbartonshire Council project to help pupils with additional support needs at school and nursery to choose their own lunches is in the running for one of the national local authority awards run by Cosla. The pictorial menu initiative allows children with learning disabilities to select pictures of their chosen menu items and present them to catering staff.

- Perth and Kinross Council’s safer community wardens have launched a new initiative in local primary schools to help them engage with young people and build community spirit. The Community Warden Shield project will be held four times a year, and include quizzes, sports competitions and other challenges. Participating primary schools are Tulloch, Letham, Our Lady’s, Goodlyburn, North Muirton, Rattray and St John’s.

- 150 primary schools across the UK have received first-hand help from secondary school pupils to create traditional orchards in their grounds, as part of the Fruit-full Schools project. The 50 secondary schools involved in the scheme donated trees nurtured in their own grounds to three primary feeder schools.

- Pupils from Inverclyde’s primary and secondary schools took part in the Shipshape Eco Ferry challenge last month, in which they were asked to design and build an eco ferry to transport cargo along a tank. Points were awarded for a number of things including speed of transfer of cargo and innovative ferry name.
