Scots philosophy

P7 pupils at Berwickshire’s Chirnside Primary have been celebrating the 300th anniversary of philosopher David Hume, a pillar of the Scottish Enlightenment, whose family home was in their village. Pupils have performed a play and undertaken a project with their local high school and members of the community examining the life and work of Hume.

Pupils from Pentland Primary, Edinburgh, Belmont House School, Glasgow and Lathallan School, Montrose have taken part in a beaver-themed “Singtastic” session with composer and songwriter David Haines at Edinburgh Zoo. The session linked science and music, as pupils composed songs about the reintroduction of beavers to Scotland. The Scottish Beaver Trial will send materials to all schools in the autumn.

WWF-UK has launched an online nature competition for 7 to 16-year-olds, divided into film and photography; sound and music; art; poetry and prose; and dance and movement. Schools can upload entries, get free support packs and receive feedback. My True Nature runs until 9 September.

P4-5 pupils at Aberdeen’s Milltimber Primary have been given an award for their success in extending awareness of the countryside. The Charles Brown Trophy is named after a local champion of the outdoors. Pupils worked with the Royal Northern Countryside Initiative and the Royal Highland Education Trust.

Primary and secondary pupils in Glasgow are being invited to enter a competition to design signs for 11 parks linked to the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Winning designs will be incorporated into the parks’ official signage. Closing date for entries is 17 June.
