Environment

Megan MacDonald, 14, from Lionacleit School, Benbecula, won the environment award and the overall title at the Young Scot Awards, which celebrate the achievements of 14 to 22-year-olds. She was praised for her campaign to combat climate change and for leading a skills academy to teach her community new ways to make a living.

Talent show

Science

Edinburgh University has launched a science- based talent competition for secondary pupils in the Edinburgh area, in X-Factor style. “Make Me A Scientist!” asks pupils to produce a demonstration of science in everyday life. The top school prize is pound;500 of Waterstone’s vouchers. The closing date is 10 September. www.makemeascientist.org.
