Road safety

PSE

- Holmston Primary in Ayr has become one of the first schools in the west of Scotland to use a new road safety pack. Designed around fictional character Speeding Ted, it aims to make young people think about the dangers of speeding and the impact it has on the local community. www.south-ayrshire.gov.ukroadssafety

Literacy

- The National Literacy Trust and Build-A-Bear Workshop launched a nationwide story competition on 3 March. Open to children aged five to 11, it encourages them to have fun with their writing while developing literacy skills. The beginning of the story has been written by author Katharine Holabird, and children are challenged to complete the tale. The deadline for entries is 8 April.

Euroquiz win

Social studies

- St Joseph's Primary in East Renfrewshire is celebrating winning the local authority heats for Euroquiz. The team will represent its area at the Scottish Parliament final in June, an annual nationwide test of children's knowledge of history, geography, sport, culture and the EU. seet.uk.comprimaryschools.html

Best behaviour

PSE

Pupils at Park Primary in Stranraer are taking part in a new behaviour improvement project. Every pupil is placed in one of four teams: Patience, Achievement, Respect and Kindness, notching up merits or demerits during the term. The best-behaved pupils enter a monthly prize draw.

Food waste

Eco education

Stirling Council is trialling a six-month food waste collection service for 16 primaries, five secondaries and a nursery, which will see food scraps sent to an anaerobic digestion plant near Cumbernauld, to be turned into electricity. It was launched at Borestone Primary, where head Jessie Wojciechowski said: "It has been useful for children to see the amount of food waste and all have committed to producing less waste."
