Skills for work
Twelve fifth and sixth-year pupils from six Highland schools have started a course on maritime skills at Portree High. The pupils from schools in Ardnamurchan, Mallaig, Portree, Ullapool, Kinlochbervie and Kilchuimen will gain industry-recognised qualifications for completing the three-week residential SQA Skills for Work course.
Marine studies
Work placement
Two teenagers from Aberdeen have delivered significant research results in a six-week placement with Marine Scotland Science. Last summer, Katie, a Kincorth Academy pupil, won awards for her efficiency study of plankton nets. This summer, Mairi, a sixth-year pupil at Hazelhead Academy, applied fluorescent staining to shrimp eggs to determine if they will hatch.

Cheered on by Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lachie Stewart, 31 pupils from St Peter the Apostle High in Clydebank represented Scotland at last week’s World Marathon Challenge. In the event, organised by the Save the Children charity, each pupil ran seven 200m relay legs. The aim is to break Haile Gebrselassie’s world record marathon time of 2:03:59 hours.

Languages
St Roch’s Secondary in Glasgow has won an international award for its innovative language teaching, which combines languages with workplace experience. The school was presented with the European Language Label at the European Commission’s London office.
Maker go for it
Sport
Teams of 16 to 18 year-olds are invited to apply for Young Games Maker roles at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The organising committee is searching for about 250 teams - a total of 2,000 young people - to take up volunteer roles.
