Science

Perth and Kinross primary pupils have been asked to pick their “superstar of science” and research their impact on modern-day life. Competition packs are being sent out by TechFest-SetPoint, which promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects.

One hundred and twenty primary pupils in East Ayrshire were fired with enthusiasm at the “Flames” festival organised by Active Schools in the lead-up to the 2012 Olympics. The festival, held in Kilmarnock College Centre of Sporting Excellence, began with the playing of the national anthems while pupils, dressed in the colours of their adopted country, paraded flags and banners.

Art

Glasgow City Council announced the winners of its Commonwealth Parks Challenge - an artwork competition that twinned schools and parks in the city with countries of the Commonwealth as part of the run-up to the Glasgow 2014 Games. The winning artwork, by pupils from St Bernard’s Primary, Garrowhill, Milton School and Howford School will be displayed in Pollok Country Park, and Tollcross, Auchinlea, Springburn, Bellahouston and Hogganfield parks.

Dance and media

Falkirk Community Trust received #163;10,000 from EventScotland to run a dance and media project. A digital artist and dance artists create pieces of performance art with about 250 pupils. Active Schools co-ordinators, meanwhile, selected several primaries for a hip-hop project.

Ghana links

African schools

The British Council is giving #163;7,050 funding to South Ayrshire Council to build links with primary and secondary schools in Ghana. Three delegates from Ghana visited earlier this month and links between 14 South Ayrshire schools have started via email and phone calls. South Ayrshire delegates are expected to visit Ghana soon.
