Thousands of pupils and teachers have turned their classrooms into bird hides for a wildlife survey.

The RSPB’s annual Big Schools Birdwatch, 16-30 January, encourages children to count the birds that share their school environment. Teachers were sent free RSPB packs, posters and counting charts.

A day in the life of a South African farmer’s child is one of the topics in a UK competition encouraging primary pupils to learn more about the world. Help a South African School invites pupils to produce project books on South African culture. Children must also donate unwanted books to the country’s rural schools.
