Literacy

Find out how 10 to 15-year-olds are taught reading across the curriculum in Australia, where literacy teaching scores well in international surveys. Claire Acevedo, an Australian expert in genre pedagogy, will demonstrate how teachers model and scaffold reading. Nazi terror

History

- A teaching resource on the Nazi terror campaign against minority groups was launched to mark last month’s Holocaust Memorial Day. Mosaic: Victims of Nazi persecution will help pupils aged 13-plus to learn about discrimination against minorities, starting with Jews in Hungary and disabled people across Europe. For more, visit

- The UK’s fastest-growing racket sport is being offered at a Scottish secondary in a bid to boost the number of girls doing PE. Racketball - similar to squash, with a larger racket and ball - was introduced at John Paul Academy in Glasgow after a health survey found girls do less exercise than boys as they get older.

- An educational charity run by ex-military personnel is offering teachers free taster sessions of its work. SkillForce says instructors “nurture confidence, improve academic ability and act as role models” for “lower achievers”. The charity’s programmes, aimed at complementing the core curriculum, can lead to various qualifications.

- The charity Link Community Development is looking for volunteers to take part in its 2012 Malawi Bike Ride (30 June - 9 July).
