- Young knitters from St Joseph’s Primary in East Renfrewshire have taken part in a world-record attempt. Alzheimer Scotland is trying to beat the record for the largest hand-knitted blanket (557 square metres). The final blanket will have 71,000 squares, the number of people with dementia in Scotland in 2010.

Geography

- Edinburgh’s geological past has been brought to life by a new project, Rock Opera. Created by Edinburgh charity Hoda and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, it comprises a short animated film, an online game, a free smart phone application, and a teacher resource pack. The project was launched last week at the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

- Pupils at St Mary’s Primary in Alexandria prepared for WWF’s Earth Hour event at the end of March by creating a model of local landmark Drumkinnon Tower, one of hundreds of buildings throughout Scotland that went dark at 8.30pm.

- A model of Stumpy Tower, made by P4 pupils at Girvan Primary, has won a competition organised by South Ayrshire Council to promote Earth Hour 2012. The contest asked pupils to build a model of one of the 15 notable public buildings or landmarks taking part in Earth Hour 2012.

- Dalmarnock Primary in Glasgow is involved in its second Comenius project, called “U-knighted by knowledge”, with schools in Italy, Poland, Spain and Turkey. Four teachers and a council modern languages expert recently visited San Biagio, Ravenna, Italy, and observed lessons at primary and middle school level. They also took part in the opening of the Comenius partners’ art exhibition on “all things medieval”.
