CLASSES IN upper primary could be split into four broad subject areas taught by semi-specialist teachers as a preparation for secondary school, local authority leaders have recommended.
A draft response to the Government’s White Paper, Targeting Excellence, proposes specialisms in maths, English and history, science and geography, and music and arts for pupils in primary 4 to primary 7. There would be no increase in staff numbers.
“Children in each of P4 to P7 would move round four classrooms for their four subject groups rather than stay in a single room,” the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities states. Only small rural schools where two or more year groups are taught together in the same room would be exempt.
