What do people not know about your job that they should?

Headteachers are responsible for everything in school - from raising attainment to the state of toilets.

What else do you read regularly?

The Herald, education writers - Andy Hargreaves, Tim Brighouse, Stephen Covey. I’m reading I, Claudius - again - and Diary of a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star by Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople, the best band of all time.

Who would you like to see writing in TESS?

More students.

What would you be excited to see on the front page?

The impact of East Ayrshire’s strategy for redressing disadvantage and building ambition across communities.

What do you see as the big issue for Scottish education?

We simply won’t have the transformational change we aspire to if education continues to be micro-managed.
