Summer-borns deserve more sensitivity and a better reception

Summer-born children will not be “damaged” by starting school at four if their school follows the foundation stage curriculum to the letter.

Sir Jim Rose’s priority should focus on funding for reception classes. Our youngest children need a highly qualified early years-trained teacher and two trained teaching assistants. At the moment, this is beyond the budget of most schools.

In addition, every school with a reception class should have large, covered all-weather outside areas fitted with high-quality equipment.

It is crucial that we find the financial resources to make it the right of every reception child in every school to access the very best early years provision.
