UNTIL JULY 16. MISSENDEN ABBEY, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

People spending a weekend at the Abbey can choose from at least 12 courses, for example: Puccini and popular opera, embroidery, Japanese, painting, computer textile design, Greek, Portuguese, Verdi’s life and works, music and theatre workshops, writing skills, personal development, and health and fitness. EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY

One and two-week courses include: Scottish archaeology, understanding music, Scottish Gaelic, the short story, playwriting, film studies (a film festival runs from August 12-18), the Edinburgh Fringe, and Scottish culture studies. THE OXFORD EXPERIENCE

A choice of 35 week-long seminars at Christ Church, Oxford. Afternoons are free for course-related field trips. Topics include: Winston Churchill; the Civil War in Oxfordshire; William Morris and the arts and crafts movement; Charles Dickens; W H Auden; women painters from the Renaissance to Impressionism; the architecture of Oxford; Chaucer; and Shakespeare’s tragic heroines. OXFORD UNIVERSITY: ENGLISH LITERATURE

Courses on Shakespeare, the Romantics, 19th-century fiction, modernism, modern literary theory, postwar British fiction and women’s fiction are on offer at Exeter College. DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

Middlesex University’s Technology Education Centre in London N14, will display 60 new teaching aids at its teachers’ summer school, which is part of the Engineering Council’s Technology Enhancement Programme. DOLMETSCH HISTORICAL DANCE SOCIETY: IL BEL DANZARE

Dances of the courts of Europe circa 1500 “from the serenely beautiful to the lively and dramatic” for all abilities at Hengrave Hall, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. BRITTEN: PETER GRIMES

Singers aged over 16 of all abilities are given the chance to take part in a fully-staged opera with the English Touring Opera at Basingstoke’s Queen Mary Centre. LANCASTER UNIVERSITY SUMMER PROGRAMME

The first three weeks are spent on the Lancaster campus and the fourth on the Lake District campus in Ambleside. Action-packed weeks are organised for young people while their parents follow courses on painting, history, calligraphy, chess, music literature, golf, fell-walking, French conversation, archery, golf, drama and more. Organised by Roehampton Institute, London, the Shakespeare Institute and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, at King Edward VI Grammar School in Stratford-upon-Avon where Shakespeare was probably educated. CAMPUS

Theatre, dance and music shows, daytime childcare, evening storytelling, workshops, films, classes, lectures, sports, and adventure playgrounds at Campus Holidays, Fletcherscombe, Diptford, Totnes, Devon. Campus is divided into camping villages laid out around a campfire and a marquee for breakfasts and workshops. Children are kept occupied with constructive play, gymnastics, theatre and puppet shows.
