Children at a Sunderland primary have turned their school grounds into an eco-friendly wildlife haven to be enjoyed by the local community.

More than 400 pupils from Valley Road Community Primary took part in the Greening the Valley scheme, which introduces them to the natural world and includes planting native British broadleaf trees, flowers and herbs.

Among the projects is the Bug Hotel, built by the pupils to capture insects to improve the school’s eco-system, while The Hive was created to provide a suitable habitat for bees. rv.
